The big wire sculpture project (FUN Monday)
… is finally finished!
I alluded to it months and months ago. Many of you have long since forgotten about it no doubt. But with the gentle encouragement from my company (in the form of threatening to take back the $500 they already awarded me) I completed it.
Background
My company is great to work for. One of the reasons for that is the values that the company subscribes to. We don’t have ‘rules’ per se, but rather values that we all abide by. This way, there isn’t any quibbling over the fine meaning of such and such rule, or that some rule doesn’t exist, so I can do such and such thing. We work and make decisions based on the guidelines provided us by the company’s core values. The values are:
- Do the right thing
- Help one another
- Deliver raving service
- Produce quality always
- Exceed expectations
- Embrace change
- Accept social responsibility
- Earn a reasonable profit
My sculpture
Years ago I saw the great Pixar movie, The Incredibles, and a scene stuck in my head. The scene where Mr. Incredible is down in the caves and the word “Kronos” is formed when Mr. I. moves to the proper position in the cave. That idea was the germination of a project that came to fruition last week.
The above eight values are built in wire in such a way that you have to stand in a different place in front of the art to clearly read each one. Hopefully the photos give you an idea of what it’s about. Luckily my office had an ideal place for me to erect the art–in a heavily trafficked stairwell with two alcoves. For years, I’ve been bugging the president that we needed some art in those alcoves. Well, I took matters into my own hands.
It probably doesn’t look like much from these photos, but hopefully the last photo above will help make the design more clear.
A big thank you goes out to Kellie and James for assisting with the cutting and shaping of the individual letters–of which there are 24 words, 147 letters!
Later I’ll have a “Making of…” post detailing how I got from raw wire to the finished product. For some reason I can’t find the photos I took of those earlier stages…

I like your scuplture, and I like the philosophy of your company. No rules but values to embrace. I especially like “accept social responsiblity.”

Oh wow that’s the reason it took so long. It’s great and so intriguing too. Love the idea of it.
Your company is amazing to have the guidelines instead of rules. All places should be that great huh?
