Restoring Classic mode in OS X

Here’s a procedure for restoring the Classic Startup.app:

Another Step-by-Step using Pacifist courtesy of a Level 4 helper, Eric.

Here are step-by-step instructions for reinstalling and updating the Classic Startup.app. Here you use Pacifist to do the dirty work on both the CD and the Combo Update package — but you don’t actually re-install the Combo Update. If you’re comfortable with Pacifist, then you might prefer the one here; if you’re not, then I’d try the procedure in Part II instead.

Please note the difference in #9 (Replace button) and #17 (Update button); it’s important.

1. Stick 10.2, disk 1 in the drive

2. Quit Classic if it’s running, and launch Pacifist

3. Select “Open Package” (either under Pacifist’s “File” menu or with the button on the opening dialog box.)

4. Navigate to this package and “open” it:
/Mac OS X Install Disc 1/System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg
In a few moments, you’ll get a Pacifist window, which shows the contents of the Essentials package.

5. Click the disclosure triangle next to “System” (folder); then “Library” (folder) underneath it; then “CoreServices” (folder) underneath that.

6. Highlight/select “ClassicStartup.app”. (There’s no need to click the disclosure triangle.) Aftering selecting, the buttons in the top left corner should become live.

7. Click “Install” in the top left corner.

8. Accept that you want to “Install” the app, and authenticate (enter your admintrator’s name and password) as instructed. Pacifist will start the process of installing the older version of Classic Startup.app.

9. During the process, Pacifist will prompt you to either “Update” or “Replace” the “ClassicStartup.app”. Press the Replace button. Let Pacifist finish before moving on to the next step — #9.5 if you need localized files, or #10 if you don’t.

[9.5. If you need localized files, then get back to Finder. In the "Welcome to Mac OS X" windows/folder is an "Optional Installs" folder. Open that folder. Double-click on the particular 'Localized Files' package whose language matches that of your 9.x System Folder, e.g. if your 9.x System Folder is Italian, then double-click the "Italian Localized Files" package. The Installer app will launch and lead through the installation of the localized files. Wait until Installer is finished before moving to the next step.]

10. Locate the appropriate Combo update for the version of OS X you’re using, e.g. if you’re using 10.2.8, find your copy of the 10.2.8 Combo update.
•If your copy of the update is stored as a disk image, e.g. MacOSXUpdateCombo10.2.x.dmg, then double-click it to mount the image.

11. Select “Open Package” (under Pacifist’s “File”) menu, and navigate to the Combo Update package (.pkg), e.g. MacOSXUpdateCombo10.2.8.pkg. That’s either where you’ve stored it, or in the mounted disk image.

12. After a few moments, you’ll get a Pacifist window showing the contents of the MacOSXUpdateCombo10.2.x.pkg.

13. Click the disclosure triangle next to “System” (folder); then “Library” (folder) underneath it; then “CoreServices” (folder) underneath that.

14. Highlight/select “ClassicStartup.app”. (There’s no need to click the disclosure triangle.)

15. Click “Install” in the top left corner.

16. Accept that you want to “Install” the app (authenticate if needed). Pacifist will start the install process.

17. During the process, Pacifist will prompt you either to “Update” or “Replace” the “ClassicStartup.app”. Press the Update button.

18. Once Pacifist is finished. Check permissions with Disk Utility, “First Aid” tab.

I don’t know that this will resolve your problem in it’s entirety. You may need to reinstall OS 9.

It’s also important to know if, when you formatted your hard drive, you checked the option to install Mac OS 9 drivers? If not, you will need to reformat the drive.
