Originally planned for four miles tonight, but got two bonus miles in. In cycling, I usually scored bonus miles by riding to and from the actual event, like the 12 mile round trip to John Ceceri’s house for his springtime 200km ride. Or riding from my in-law’s house in Round Lake to the Corpus Christie Church on Usher’s road for the Wednesday night group ride… again about 10 or 12 bonus miles. In running, 2 miles is about it for bonus miles for me. Actually, now that I think about it that’s 50% more miles than I was planning. Ten bonus miles on a 40 mile group ride is only 25% more.
My biggest worry in the beginning was that my knees would give me trouble. So far they’ve felt better and better. Tonight, nary a whimper, even with farther-than-I-should-probably-go miles and serious cold temps. Even with a simple pair of lined windbreaker pants. The quads started a comfortable burn around mile four. After mile five I poured on a little more juice and finished strong. Those three slices of Pizza Hut Pan Pizza for dinner have probably been all burned off.
This time the gloves came off for only 10 or 15 minutes at a time. The balaclava had a wicked encrusting of ice particles around the small opening at the face. Plus there were some neat plumes of ice where my breath wrapped around my head as I pushed forward. The fragile crystalline structures melted almost immediately as I tried to get a camera to record them when I got back inside.
Don’t be Cruel
At the beginning of the week I took a quickie video of something you might get a kick out of. I noticed it on my seven mile run from last week. And I was surprised I hadn’t noticed it before, but it’s on a road I don’t often ride on, but will start frequently running on. A development for senior living moved in about two miles from my house. Their driveway is opposite a rather unfortunately area. Unfortunate for the tenants. It just seems cruel to me. What do you think?
Please forgive the dreadful video quality and jitters. Obviously I need a steadicam.

In Michigan, near Mackinaw, I’ve seen something just like that, a senior citizen’s recreational facility next to a cemetery. Gotta’ laugh.

That’s too funny. At least the trip will be short. :)
