The address bar icon (.ico)

Lastly, in viewing the screen shot, you may notice that Safari displays the siteÕs address window icon (.ico) in limited 8-bit color whereas Camino displays it in 32-bit full color. Oddly enough, instead of matching its Gecko sibling Camino, Netscape 7 also displays the icon in limited 8-bit color. IE6/Win displays it in full 32-bit color, but only if you first bookmark the site. If you do not add the site to your bookmarks, IE6/Win will not display the icon at all.

IE5/Mac does not display the .ico file no matter what you do. This is not a huge deal (.ico is not a standard) but once you get used to seeing .ico files, it becomes hard to do without them. Opera 7 does not display it by default, but will do so if you explictly link to it via meta tag (thanks: Rijk van Geijtenbeek and Jeremy White):

We donÕt know why some browsers display the .icos in limited 8-bit color whereas others display them in full 32-bit color. The issue has nothing to do with the browserÕs underlying rendering engine. :::
